It took me a while to remember that J.Cole was streaming Born Sinner for free online, since the album has just been leaked. I was mad when I found out that it happened, because I truly believe that J Cole is a great addition to hip hop. He's a part of the new generation that succeeds in using hip hop as an art form, and not just some sort of thoroughly superficial composition of misogyny, drug use, and constant partying. I mean, I'm not saying that it comes from complete left field with it's subject matter, but it's a great step in the right direction when we have people like Juicy J, Waka Flocka Flame, and 2 Chainz. We have to balance it out people.
I figured I would listen to Born Sinner; I'm smack dab in the middle of it right now. I quite adore it; it doesn't sound like radio hip hop and it's refreshing. My favorite song by far is Forbidden Fruit, with Kendrick Lamar. I could go on and on about him, but let's just say I still listen to good kid M.A.A.D City all the time. I won't say that I totally get the overall story of Born Sinner, as I did with GKMC. When I listened to GKMC I felt as if I was watching one of those 90s hood movies like Juice or Menace II Society, eavesdropping in on their lives. Born Sinner's more of a life rapidly flashing before your eyes type of album, with certain problems in life being explained but not necessarily in order.
So, if you've got some free time on your hands it's worth while to take a listen to Born Sinner. It's quite the experience. If you fall in love with it, as I did, it comes out on June 18. Buy a copy, support talent!
Power trip is a close second on my favorites, and the video is pretty brilliant. &, of course, there's Miguel.
